The crucial delicacy of the Hungarian Christmas and Easter is the Beigli (Nut Roll). Its name originated from the German word beugen (means 'to bend'), because of the rolled form of the cake. Although the cake, a roulade with walnut or poppy seed filling, was probably introduced from Austria, it has a more exotic origin: it was prepared by the Sumerians and ancient Egyptians. When shaped like a crescent it evokes the cult of the moon (it is then called Pozsonyi kifli or Bratislava Roll, from the town of Pozsony, now Bratislava in Slovakia).
