Kugelhopf ('risen ball' in German) is a yeast-based cake from Alsace, similar to French brioche and Bundt cake. Legend has it that the recipe for this brioche and the shape of the mould were given to a potter of Ribeauvillé by the name of Kugel, by the Three Kings, whom he welcomed with hospitality. The traditional pattern in Europe was for the kugelhopf to be baked for Sunday breakfast, when the village baker had his day off. In olden days, a piece of kugelhopf with wine for men and coffee for women was served before the lengthy marriage ceremonies.
